ConvaTec is a global healthcare company leading the way in chronic care and medical technologies. With a growing digital product ecosystem and teams spread across regions, they needed a smarter way to build, scale, and evolve their digital experiences.
Overview.
As part of their ongoing digital transformation, ConvaTec introduced the idea of regional lighthouses. These are pilot projects designed to test ideas locally before rolling them out globally. To support this vision, we developed the CARE Design System. It was created to maintain consistency, improve delivery speed, and support local teams in launching products with confidence.
The Brief.
With multiple markets testing different ideas at once, consistency had become difficult to maintain. Our challenge was to create a system that offered both structure and flexibility. Local teams needed the freedom to adapt content and layouts to regional needs, while the brand needed to remain cohesive at a global level. The system also had to support content-heavy interfaces, meet accessibility standards, and align with existing development workflows.
The Challenge.
Designing for the healthcare space means dealing with complex user needs, strict regulatory standards, and high-stakes information. The challenge was making the platform feel human, empathetic, and easy to navigate without oversimplifying the content. Building a design system that could support both patient-facing and professional tools also required careful UX thinking and collaboration across multiple teams.
Project Impact.
This was a collaborative effort across a focused design team, including myself, a dedicated UX designer, and an accessibility specialist. Together, we worked to build a system that could scale globally while staying rooted in user needs and accessibility best practices.
My role centred on shaping the visual language and component architecture within the CARE Design System. I led the creation of scalable UI components, defined system logic, and helped establish consistent naming conventions for labels, variants, and tokens. I was also involved in setting up the broader system structure — ensuring that components were flexible enough to work across different products, teams, and regions.
Beyond interface design, I worked closely with developers and product teams to make sure the system was practical, maintainable, and aligned with both brand and technical requirements. CARE is now actively used across multiple lighthouse projects, providing a shared foundation that helps ConvaTec deliver faster, stay consistent, and evolve with confidence.
